@Eli, not everyone has mobilised to help, and unfortunately the areas that were cleaned that day were the main tourist zones/shopping mall district. The streets in Din Daeng and near my apt remain charred and the shattered glass hasn’t been replaced. But Din Daeng is not a touristy area and thus it wasn’t targetted for immediate clean up. Pretty sad.

@Forks & Jets: They’re actually illegal for import per the FDA – only dehydrated ones are allowed. Something about a beetle/bug that destroys citrus crops? It’s reason enough for me to move back to Asia. Well, that and the somtam!

I very much agree that for a “western mind” this is hard to comprehend. Like Chris said above, I can hardly believe this is the same Silom and CentralWorld I was in weeks ago! Very brave of you to stick around, I’m sure the cleanup efforts were difficult, and I hope that they gave you some finality and peace of mind.

Hope Bali proves soothing — eat some delicious mangosteens for us — they’re impossible to find back in the states!!

Thanks for taking so much time to cover all of these recent events. I’ve been following closely, and I can’t wait to visit Bangkok in October. Very cool that so many people mobilized to do clean-up work so quickly. It sounds like people have a lot of pride for their city in Bangkok.

Great article. I (like Chris C.) was in Bangkok the first week the protests started.
I make a great impression when a foreigner helps with the clean-up work like you did.
