I recently wrote a guest post for the lovely Gray Carhill on her Solo Friendly site about long term solo female travel. As Legal Nomads has evolved, I’ve gotten more and more emails from women wanting to take the plunge and travel alone, but worried about safety or lonliness. When Gray asked me to guest on her site, I thought I would use it as a way to aggregate my advice, as well as provide some basic tips of my own.
If you’re interested, my thoughts on solo female travel are here.

Hi Jodi,
Lovely level-headed article on solo travel :) I can’t wait till your travels take you here!
Thanks guys. It was great to aggregate my thoughts in one place, and I am really happy that her readers found the tips useful.
I just checked out your post over there and I really enjoyed it! I have only traveled solo out of the country once, and it was unexpected (a friend studying abroad was supposed to meet up with my on that leg of the trip but he had to cancel due to a last-minute emergency). Because I wasn’t planning for that, it completely freaked me out–I thought I was going to spend a few nights in Paris with a friend, not alone! While it was really rough at first, I started to realize the benefits of getting to do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I’ve been looking forward to my next solo experience, so it gives me a lot of confidence to read that post from you!
I always wanted to do some solo travel, but it is scary, however it push you to make friends and anjoy more. Perhaps to get into a bigger group of solo travelers….get an adventure from life.
Great pic! :P
Dani: as Emily can attest, solo travel is rarely a lonely or scary experience. Yes, there are some moments that are perhaps better shared with others. And there have been times when I sought to move elsewhere because I felt less comfortable. Ultimately, though, it’s a lovely way to learn more about yourself and have the freedom to travel where you want (when you want).
Marcello: gracias!
