New reader here, great stuff. So much to take away but my overall sense of your interpersonal relationship strategies is that the same ones that serve you well in exotic locales were also part of your success in NYC. I'm a male and obviously it would be naive to believe there are no gender based safety issues-sheer brute force in a crisis the most obvious. But my experience is that there is no certainty. I could be mugged leaving my home in the states to go to work. I could slip and fall and die in the shower. We can live in fear or live in faith. I'm the father of 2 daughters so will be bookmarking this for future reference.

Remarkable! The only thing small about you is your physical vessel. I work in behavioral health and the personal transformation you describe through facing your fears is inspiring. My sense is, though, that you couldn't have resisted your urge to journey outward if you wanted. I hope my 2 daughters have just a little of your spirit in their DNA. Thank you for sharing your story.

I've become a pro at discarding potential salons. If the hairdresser has a mullet, run the other way. If you can't tell immediately if the hairdresser is a boy or a girl, run the other way. If you explain what you want, the hairdresser makes a perplexed expression and then says, "I know what to do," with scissors in hand, get out of the chair.

I love how Marianne paused to think about what would inspire sustained, conscious activism. You both have an incredible life story and I'm happy to see your lives intertwine at Thrillable Hours.

I love this post! And not just because I love food, but I think you're absolutely right about condiments and spices serving as a historical perspective on a culture. It's interesting to me to see the influences of other countries in food, too. Coming from Mexican heritage and having studied in Spain, it was interesting to see the influences they had on each other's cuisines.

Also, you've given me yet another reason to visit Turkey--I love pickled anything! Although it's kind of a trend here in Portland as you can see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYey8ntlK_E

Hi Robert, yes you can use them on gas stoves - that's actually what they're designed for (over the fire). Happy cooking!

Another great story. I admire Marianne for what she believes and has accomplished. I am not ready to minimize my life yet. Making more money than I have ever made has allowed me to pursue the things I want and still stay soccially conscience of the world around me. By the way "more money" is a relative term
